We would be disabling support for Neomail this weekend on all our shared servers. Removal of features is not a decision we take lightly. However in light of the circumstances, we have decided that dropping support for Neomail as an option is the best way forward. We would be explaining our rationale for this decision below.

1. Neomail is no longer in development. The last release was in 2002, almost 3 years ago. This means that any bugs or issues or security issues are no longer being fixed by the developers. Similarly as this is a 3rd party software, Cpanel is not supporting it directly, instead leaving it to the developers to fix any issues. This becomes a serious issue in light of point 2.

2. The current version of Perl does not work well with Neomail. Whenever a user reaches their full disk quota, and accesses their Neomail, a Neomail process will stay open perpetually using 50-99% of the CPU power, until forceably killed by us. At the same time, the same user can easily end up starting multiple processes quickly spiking the load to over 30 in some cases before the processes is killed by us when our monitoring system picks up the load spikes. We have been actively and proactively doing it for many weeks. However this problem has grown more serious recently with the instances where we have to log in to restore normal operation escalating exponentially. In light of 1, neither Cpanel nor the original Neomail developers is interested in fixing this. This has been an issue for many months and is documented.

3. Cpanel does provide excellent alternatives in Horde and Squirrelmail for Webmail users.

It is with careful consideration that we decided that dropping support for Neomail is the best decision moving forward as it is just not feasible to provide support for it. Should the bug listed above be fixed, we would be happy to consider enabling it again. We expect to implement this on all the servers this weekend i.e anyone logging in on Webmail will no longer see Neomail as an option. Till then, we will still continue to proactively log in to fix the load issues as and when they occur.

You are advised to notify all your clients (if any) of this impending change and to start migrating to alternate Webmail systems. No mails will be lost from this transition, but users will have to setup their preferences and address books if they have not used other Webmail systems previously.

If you require more time to notify your clients, or has violent objections dropping Neomail as a Webmail option, please reply to this email. We will be glad to discuss and work with you to get this sorted out to your satisfaction as far as possible.

Thank you.
